Current term

English- the children are working very hard to write sentences using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces. We will begin to extend our sentences using ‘and’ to add detail. The children have loved reading and following instructions to make jam sandwiches. Which they thoroughly enjoyed eating afterwards!

Phonics and reading is extremely important in Year 1 and we ask that you listen to your child read five times a week and record each read in their reading planners. This will be counted up on a Friday and we start counting from the previous Friday to give them a full week to read 5x. Please practise your child’s sounds using their sound mat and ask them lots of questions or to retell the story as this will really help their progression, confidence and love of reading.

Maths- everyday the children practise counting forwards and backwards up to 100 and also counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. The children have enjoyed practising their Addition and Subtraction (within 20) and use both visual and concrete resources/ equipment to support their learning. They have also started to take part in different maths challenges. This involves children completing a certain number of number sentences in 5 minutes. The focus of these challenges is their number bonds to 5, 10 and 20. Please help your child to learn them at home!

This term we are Geographers and will be focussing at first on the children’s surrounding area in detail. They will know the location of our school and their own homes. They will also go out and use fieldwork and observational skills to find human and physical features of the immediate area around the school. Then we will devise maps of the school using aerial photographs. We will then zoom out and the children will look in detail at the UK and its four countries and their capitals cities. Everyday we talk about the weather and patterns in weather and we will compare this to other countries within the UK and within each season.

The children are so excited to plan and practise for our Year 1 wedding which will be held at Locking Castle Church on 1st April!
